  • Iron infusions are a treatment option for those with iron deficiency who are not able to tolerate oral supplements due to side effects or allergies, or have tried them without an improvement.

    Why is iron important?

Our bodies need iron. Iron is used to make haemoglobin – the part of our red blood cells that carries oxygen around our body. It is also important for muscle strength, energy and good mental function.

If your iron levels are low this may make you feel tired, short of breath, or you may have palpitations.

As the amount of iron in the body falls even lower, the haemoglobin level drops below normal. This is known as ‘iron deficiency’.

    What is an Iron Infusion

Intravenous or IV means giving something directly into the blood stream of the body through a vein. A needle placed into a vein (usually in the arm) is attached to a syringe or a drip that contains iron. This fluid is slowly infused into the vein and mixes with the blood in your body

Why do I need an Iron Infusion?

The most common way to treat iron deficiency is to take iron by mouth as a tablet or liquid. This works well for most people and is usually tried first.

Some people may need iron to be given straight into the body through a vein. This is called an Intravenous (IV) iron infusion. The iron is given through a needle and dripped (‘infused’) into your vein.

Sometimes two iron infusions (given at least 1 week apart) are needed to fully top up iron stores. The infusion is made up of iron, not blood. IV iron might be needed if you:

    • Are not able to take iron tablets / liquid

    • Are not responding to iron tablets / liquid or not absorbing them

    • Need to get your iron levels up quickly (e.g. before major surgery, late in pregnancy or to avoid blood transfusion)

    • If you have chronic kidney disease or chronic heart failure

Your doctor should explain why you need IV iron and the other options

How do I make an appointment?

Dr Katerina Michailidis is an independent Specialist General Practitioner who provides iron infusions here at The Emeline. To make an appointment, please book online or call our friendly reception team on (03) 9088 4133.

    What to expect:

If your doctor has recommended you have an iron infusion, please ensure you pick up the iron from the chemist prior to your appointment (your doctor will need to give you a script for the appropriate amount). You will also need to bring a copy of your blood tests. You do not need a referral.

Please ensure you are well hydrated to assist with cannulation – eat and drink as normal. Unless you have an unexpected reaction, you will be able to drive home and do your normal activities.

You will be closely monitored while IV iron is given, and for 30 minutes after. Sometimes side effects (e.g. headache, muscle or joint pain) can start 1 to 2 days later. Mostly they will settle down by themselves over the next couple of days. If they worry you or interfere with your daily activities contact your doctor for advice.

  • Did you know? A boy born in Australia today, on average, has a lower life expectancy than a girl born at the same time.

We believe that good general practice not only includes early identification and management, but involves recognising preventive opportunities when a male patient presents. We understand that everybody is different and there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution to medical care, we also understand that everybody has different priorities with respect to their healthcare and lifestyle.

We believe in our patients having a regular GP who knows them well, understands their health preferences, goals in life, healthcare needs, and provides them with regular care throughout life.

  • We offer telehealth consultations for existing patients or patients isolating with COVID19. Our doctors are experienced with delivering medical care using telehealth and consider it to be a wonderful service for patients.

There are many medical issues that can be safely assessed and effectively managed using telehealth. Sometimes we also need to arrange a follow-up in-person assessment after the telehealth consultation to ensure that we can manage your care.

There are also some medical issues that cannot be safely assessed by telehealth. For example, our doctors do not prescribe drugs of dependence such as opiates or benzodiazepines via telehealth. It is also generally very difficult to examine ears, eyes or a throat via telehealth.

We charge a private consultation fee for our telehealth appointments. Medicare has rules around whether a patient is eligible for a rebate towards telehealth consultations. Patients are not entitled to a Medicare rebate for telehealth consultations unless they have seen a GP at the same practice in person during the previous 12 month period, or are isolating with COVID19.

The desired outcome for a patient with an injury is to return to normal life as soon as possible. A document called a Certificate of Capacity provides information about the injury, illness, capacity and limitations on work. The information in this document can allow for a worker and an employer to plan for suitable arrangements for a return to work, including what a worker can do once back at work.

Your GP may assist you through this process, including to:

    • Provide information about the injury or condition
    • Provide a medical opinion on your current capacity and limitations based on the work-related injury or condition
    • Revise the certificate as the injury, condition, or capacity changes
    • Assess and certify your capacity, regardless of whether suitable employment is available
    • Discuss returning to work with you from the first consultation and set realistic expectations around return to work timelines
    • Review any proposed return to work arrangements from the employer to ensure that the proposed duties fit within your assessed capacity.

Your WorkCover doctor will complete a WorkCover certificate of capacity for you. This outlines the duties that you can/cannot perform at work and anything that can help your recovery. The WorkCover certificate of capacity is also used to communicate your WorkCover case with your insurer, employer, and other health professionals involved. The WorkCover Certificate of Capacity must be updated by your nominated WorkCover doctor every 28 days – this means you should follow up with the same doctor for WorkCover appointments.
